She sings along the shoreline. A beautiful melodic song that entrances all those who hear her. She dances in the waves and dreams of her magical life deep below the surface of the water.
According to Celtic legend, the merrow frolicked in the frigid waters near the rugged Irish coastline. These sea fairies were women from the waist up, and fish from the waist down. They always wore enchanted caps known as cohuleen druith, which allowed them to swim far beneath the sea’s surface and to live safely underwater.
The merrows sang beautiful songs and sometimes men would become smitten and would steal a merrow’s magic cap, so that she would not be able to return to her life underwater, thus stealing away her freedom and transforming her from a wild creature of the sea to a domesticated mortal, similar to the folktale of the seal-skin-shedding selkie.
The Merrow Beret is created to celebrate the wild hearts and free spirits of women.
